How search works in the AI era

Search is no longer just links on a page. AI assistants now read, summarize, and cite your content directly. This guide explains the four disciplines this tool scores and how to improve each one.

Use the analyzer in seven steps

Step-by-step
  1. Analyze a URL — paste any page and the tool fetches it, detects signals, and scores AEO, AIO, GEO, and Crawlability (1–2 seconds for the rule-based analysis).
  2. Read the AI Search Readiness Score — the headline number (0–100). It is a weighted blend of AEO, AIO, GEO, and Crawlability (25% each). If critical AI bots are blocked in robots.txt it caps at 40.
  3. Open each framework tab — AEO / AIO / GEO. Each shows a signal checklist with pass/warn/fail, and ordered recommended actions.
  4. Generate fixes — the AI fix plan suggests strategic changes; the fix pack produces ready-to-paste JSON-LD schema, llms.txt, and improved meta tags.
  5. Run a Live AI Citation Test — the most valuable check. It queries an actual LLM with buyer-intent prompts and reports whether your brand gets cited (and by which competitors).
  6. Run Keyword Research — enter a seed (optionally your domain) and get intent-tagged keyword clusters with difficulty, volume, and AI relevance. When DataForSEO is connected, real Google Ads volumes are shown with a real data badge.
  7. Plan link building — for any domain, generate a prioritized outreach strategy with example targets, an anchor-aware template, and a checklist.

Tip: add your URLs to the Watchlist to track scores over time, schedule a weekly refresh via Vercel Cron for a digest email, and save keyword research to Keyword Lists to re-test later.

What SEO is

Search Engine Optimization is the practice of improving a website so it ranks higher in search engine results pages (SERPs) like Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. It is the foundation every other discipline in this guide builds on.

The three pillars

On-page SEO

Content, keywords, title tags, meta descriptions, headings (H1/H2/H3), image alt text, and internal links.

Off-page SEO

Backlinks from other reputable sites, brand mentions, social signals, and digital PR. Authority is earned elsewhere and points back to you.

Technical SEO

Fast load times, HTTPS, mobile-friendliness, clean crawlable structure, XML sitemaps, structured data, and a healthy robots.txt.

Why SEO still matters in the AI era

AI assistants are trained on and cite the open web. Sites that rank well and are technically healthy are also the ones AI models most often read, summarize, and cite. SEO is not dead — it is the substrate that AEO, AIO, and GEO sit on top of. Fix the basics first.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

Get extracted as the direct answer

What AEO is

Answer Engine Optimization optimizes content to be selected as the direct answer by answer engines: Google Featured Snippets, People Also Ask (PAA), voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant), and AI answers. When someone asks “What is the best X for small business?”, AEO is about being the paragraph, list, or table the engine quotes.

How answer engines pick answers

Answer engines look for content that is atomic — a self-contained 30–50 word answer that needs no context — and structured so it can be extracted. They prefer: a clear question-format heading, an immediately following concise answer, and structured markup (FAQPage, HowTo, QAPage) that labels the Q&A explicitly.

  • Rewrite every important heading as a question people actually type.
  • Put a 30–50 word answer immediately under each question heading.
  • Add FAQPage schema with real questions + concise factual answers.
  • Add comparison tables whenever your page compares options or features.
  • Keep title tags 30–65 chars and write one clear meta description.

What AIO is

AI Overview Optimization targets Google's AI Overviews — the AI-generated answer summaries shown above regular results. Google's Gemini model reads the top-ranked pages and synthesizes a 3–5 source answer. AIO is about being one of those cited sources.

Generative Engine Optimization optimizes for AI chatbots and answer services: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and others. These tools don't just rank links — they generate an answer by synthesizing the web, and they cite sources. GEO is about being the source they name.

How to improve GEO
  • Add /llms.txt at the root of your domain — a short markdown summary with your key links.
  • Publish and earn genuine third-party mentions (reviews, lists, directories, comparison articles).
  • Keep your brand name + one-line description identical everywhere.
  • Structure content with plain-language answers that can be quoted verbatim.
  • Run citation tests monthly and target the prompts where competitors beat you.

Crawlability — the gate

If AI crawlers can't read you, nothing else matters

Why crawlability gates everything

AEO, AIO, and GEO are about content. But if an AI crawler is blocked in your robots.txt, your perfect content is invisible — no citation, no answer box, no overview. That is why the analyzer weights Crawlability at 25% of the readiness score, and caps the score at 40 when critical AI bots are blocked.

Critical for citation visibility: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. If these are blocked, your readiness score caps at 40.

llms.txt

llms.txt (introduced by answer.ai) is a plain markdown file at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt that gives AI assistants a concise summary of your site plus the most important links. It is recommended, not required — missing it costs crawlability points but doesn't block you.

Client-side rendering (CSR)

AI crawlers largely do not execute JavaScript. If your page is an SPA that renders content only in the browser, crawlers see an empty shell. Prefer server-side rendering or pre-rendering for anything you want AI engines to read.

How the scores work

Transparent formulas — nothing hidden

Readiness = (AEO × 0.25) + (AIO × 0.25) + (GEO × 0.25) + (Crawlability × 0.25)

If any critical AI bot is blocked in robots.txt:  Readiness = min(Readiness, 40)

Content Score

The “Content Score” card is the simple average of your AEO, AIO, and GEO framework scores:

Content Score = round((AEO + AIO + GEO) / 3)

It deliberately excludes crawlability so you can see content quality separately from the readiness gate.

Framework scores

Each framework score is computed from its signal checklist: passing signals contribute their weight, warnings contribute half, and failing signals contribute zero — then normalized to a 0–100 scale. Signals are weighted by impact (e.g. schema markup weights far more than a title length tweak).

Find the queries that matter and plan how to win them

Keyword research

Enter a seed keyword and optionally your domain. The tool asks an LLM to discover related queries and groups them into clusters, each keyword tagged with search intent (informational / commercial / transactional), an estimated difficulty (0–100), a monthly volume, and an AI relevance score — how likely an AI assistant is to cite a brand for that query. When DataForSEO is configured, real Google Ads search volumes and competition replace the estimates and are labeled real data.

Keyword-scoped citation test

Pick any discovered keyword and run Test citation. The tool generates three realistic buyer prompts a shopper might type into ChatGPT or Perplexity and asks every configured engine whether it would volunteer your brand. You learn which of your target queries you already win — and which you lose.

Multi-engine citation matrix

The matrix runs the same prompt set across OpenAI GPT-4o, Anthropic Claude, and any other configured engine. Each cell shows Cited, No, or a dash when the engine didn't answer. It surfaces the exact prompts where a competitor is cited and you aren't — your prioritized gap list for GEO work.

Link building planner

Give it a domain and it returns a structured plan: a strategy summary, 4–6 prioritized opportunity categories (guest posts, resource pages, directories, digital PR, broken-link building, community citations), why each fits your site, example target types, suggested anchor text, a copy-paste outreach template with {site}/{anchor} placeholders, and a checklist.

Keyword lists

Save a research run to your account as a keyword list. Revisit saved keywords later, re-run their citation tests, and track them over time as you build citation coverage.
