Free AI Overview optimization checker for Google AIO citations
Google AI Overviews synthesize a handful of sources above the classic results. This page scores the AIO column SEO Evolution Analyzer already computes: schema, authors, dates, depth, internal links, and alt text — not a promise that you appear in today’s Overview.

Check a URL for AIO signals
What is AI Overview optimization?
AIO is AI Overview Optimization: making a page eligible to be one of the sources Gemini-backed Overviews cite. It is not classic blue-link SEO and it is not ChatGPT GEO. It is E-E-A-T and freshness expressed in HTML.
Overviews sit above organic results and name a short source list. Google’s Search Central documentation still treats helpful, people-first content and structured data as the levers publishers control. SEO Evolution Analyzer turns those levers into a 0-100 AIO score. BandMasterBD.com reached 100 AIO after the fix pack added Article schema, author markup, and dates — the same signal IDs this checker reports.
Headline readiness on seo-ea.com is 25% AEO + 25% AIO + 25% GEO + 25% crawlability, capped at 40 if critical AI bots are blocked. This landing isolates AIO so you can debug author and freshness gaps without mixing in FAQ schema or sameAs links.
Which AIO signals does SEO Evolution Analyzer check?
Seven signals. Author attribution is the heaviest at 16. Article-type schema is 14. Organization schema and word count are 12. Dates are 10. Internal links are 8. Image alt coverage is 6.
| Signal | Weight | Pass rule |
|---|---|---|
| Author attribution | 16 | Person schema plus author meta or rel=author (score >= 2) |
| Article schema | 14 | Article, NewsArticle, BlogPosting, or TechArticle in JSON-LD |
| Organization schema | 12 | Organization type present |
| Content depth | 12 | 1,500+ words pass; 600-1,499 warn; below 600 fail |
| Publish and modification dates | 10 | Both datePublished and dateModified present |
| Internal link density | 8 | 10 or more same-host links |
| Image alt text | 6 | 80% or more of img tags have non-empty alt |
Vocabulary follows schema.org Article, Organization, and Person. The learn page documents the same weights.
Why does author attribution weigh more than Article schema?
Overviews attribute claims to people and publishers. Person schema plus an author meta tag or rel=author is the strongest on-page E-E-A-T combo the checker can see without calling Google’s knowledge graph.
Scoring is additive: Person schema = 2, author / article:author meta = 1, rel=author = 1. Two or more passes. One warns. Zero fails (weight 16). A byline in a <p> with no schema or meta does not count. Sitewide Organization schema (weight 12, warn if missing) tells the engine who publishes the author.
AIO is not “add Article JSON-LD and hope.” It is a named author, a named organization, dated content, and enough depth that an Overview has something to synthesize.
datePublished without dateModified warns. Neither date fails. Put both in JSON-LD. Freshness is how Overviews prefer an updated explainer over a 2019 leftover with the same keywords.
How much content depth do AI Overviews need?
The depth signal passes at 1,500 words, warns from 600, and fails below 600. That is one twelfth of the AIO weight budget, not a demand to pad every landing page.
Product homepages will often warn on depth; that is honest. Guides, research posts, and comparison articles are the URLs that should pass. Internal links (10+ same-host hrefs pass, 3-9 warn, fewer fail) show topical clustering. Alt text at 80% coverage passes; 50-79% warns; below 50% or unlabeled images fail. Zero images is treated as a note to add authoritative figures, not a free pass.
Does a high AIO score mean you appear in AI Overviews?
No. The score is extractability and attribution readiness. Appearance in an Overview is a Google retrieval outcome. Crawlability still gates the headline readiness number if GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended is blocked.
Use this checker to close schema and author gaps, then confirm crawlability on the home analyzer. Live citation tests measure ChatGPT / Claude mention rate, which is GEO outcome, not AIO appearance. Keep the metrics separate the way the GEO vs AEO vs AIO guide does.
How do you raise a weak AIO score?
Add Organization schema sitewide, Article or BlogPosting on the URL, Person schema plus rel=author, both dates, 1,500 words of expert copy, ten internal links, and alt text on images. Those are the seven AIO checks.
- Ship Organization JSON-LD on every template and Article (or BlogPosting) on content URLs.
- Add a real author page with Person schema, author meta, and rel=author on the article.
- Set datePublished and dateModified and update the modified date when the copy changes.
- Expand thin URLs past 1,500 words only where the topic deserves it; cluster with 10+ internal links.
- Re-run this AIO checker, then scan AEO and GEO if the other columns lag.
Automate the same analyze call with the hosted MCP server or REST API. The AI fix pack on the home app can emit ready-to-paste JSON-LD after you have a baseline here.
Should product pages chase the AIO depth pass?
Usually no. A 400-word product URL should warn on depth and still pass Organization, dates if you publish them, and alt text. Force-padding a SKU page to 1,500 words to game the checker produces thin copy Overviews will not cite.
Put depth on the URLs Overviews actually synthesize: category explainers, original research, and comparisons. Link those guides to product pages (internal-link density is weight 8) so the cluster is visible. Author pages should exist as real Person entities, not a shared “Marketing Team” byline without schema. The blog and learn templates on this site follow that split: long guides pass depth; tool landings aim to pass authors, schema, and dates even when word count only warns.
If you need a live before/after, the demo at YouTube shows BandMasterBD.com AIO moving with the fix pack. Replicate the markup, not the domain. Then re-run this checker and the AEO checker so snippet extractability and Overview attribution do not drift apart.
How do dates and freshness interact with AI Overviews?
datePublished plus dateModified passes the AIO dates signal. Only published warns. Neither fails. Overviews prefer an updated explainer; a stale dateModified tells the model the page has not been touched.
Update dateModified when you change facts, not on every deploy. Pair dates with Article schema so the properties live on the same node. Person schema still carries author weight 16 — a dated anonymous post warns on author even if freshness passes. Sitewide Organization schema (weight 12) names the publisher. Together those three signals are the E-E-A-T core of this checker. Crawlability remains a separate 25% of readiness; Google-Extended blocked in robots.txt caps the headline number at 40 regardless of perfect Article markup.
What internal links count toward the AIO cluster signal?
Same-host HTTP or HTTPS hrefs count. Ten or more pass, three to nine warn, fewer fail. Social profile links on other hosts do not count as internal. Relative links that resolve to your domain do count.
Cluster related guides: AEO checker, GEO checker, this AIO page, learn, and blog posts. The home analyzer should link to each tool. Do not dump 10 identical footer links and call it a cluster — the checker counts hrefs, but Overviews still read topical relevance in the copy. Product pages should point up to the pillar guide that passes depth. Guides should point down to tools. That is the internal-link pattern seo-ea.com uses across GEO, AEO, learn, blog, and API docs.
Do image alt tags really affect AI Overviews?
They are a small AIO signal — weight 6 — but they fail when fewer than 50% of img tags have non-empty alt. Eighty percent coverage passes. Fifty to 79% warns. Zero images is a note to add figures, not a free pass.
Alt text helps models describe diagrams, author photos, and comparison screenshots that Overviews may reference. Decorative spacers with empty alt are fine; unlabeled product shots are not. Pair images with Article schema and a named author so the page is attributable. Depth at 1,500 words still dominates this column at weight 12. A photo-heavy page under 600 words fails depth even with perfect alt. Put expert copy first, then images. Re-run this checker after the media pass so aio-img-alt and aio-depth update together.
Author photos with Person schema nearby help E-E-A-T more than stock hero images. Keep alt factual: name, role, chart claim. The AIO checker does not OCR images. It only counts alt attributes and word count in HTML. Pair this scan with the GEO score checker if sameAs is still empty, and with the AEO checker if question headings are missing. Readiness still caps at 40 when Google-Extended is blocked.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI Overview optimization (AIO)?
AIO is the practice of structuring pages so Google AI Overviews can cite them as a source. SEO Evolution Analyzer scores Article schema, Organization schema, author attribution, datePublished and dateModified, word count, internal links, and image alt text.
How is the AIO score calculated?
Pass earns full signal weight, warn earns half, fail earns zero, then the checker normalizes to 0-100. Author attribution weighs 16, Article schema 14, Organization schema and content depth 12 each, dates 10, internal links 8, image alt 6.
What counts as strong author attribution?
The checker awards 2 points for Person schema, 1 for author or article:author meta, and 1 for rel=author. A combined score of 2 or more passes, 1 warns, 0 fails.
How long should a page be for AIO?
1,500 or more words pass the depth signal. 600-1,499 warn. Under 600 fail. Depth is one AIO signal, not the whole score — thin pages with perfect schema still lose the weight-12 depth check.
Does AIO equal being shown in a Google AI Overview today?
No. The AIO score is on-page E-E-A-T and freshness readiness. Whether Google currently cites the URL in an Overview is a retrieval outcome, not a rule-based HTML check.
Is the AIO checker free?
Yes. Analyze free on this page posts to /api/analyze with no signup. The scan is the same rule-based AIO column as the home analyzer. Live citation tests remain a separate, quota-using feature.
